Television was once off limits to any woman other than perfect mother and housewife, or so it seems in the ‘America in Primetime’ series episode on ‘The Independent Woman’. The women who clawed their way onto the screens and who purposefully or accidentally stumbled down the road to pave the path for feminism are investigated with dignity, humour and detail in this fairly inspiring documentary. As Seinfeld’s Julia Louis Dreyfus put it, “the independent woman is in control of her life”, something that rarely got any air play at all until Lucille Ball blazed a comedic trail with “I love Lucy”. The show used comedy slapstick and saw Lucy the character grab onto the dream of being on her husband Rickie’s show (heaven forbid!) and continually pursue a showbiz career like a hungry dog with a juicy marrow bone.
